The Income Tax Department of India issues PANs, or Permanent Account Numbers. It has ten alphanumeric digits. The Government of India (GoI) would utilise PAN as a universal identifier for all digital systems, according to an announcement made by Finance Minister Smt Nirmala Sitaraman during the Union Budget 2023. This applies only to specific government entities as appointed. This will help increase the ease of doing business.

Objective

The programme is being started to broaden the PAN user base and to make it easier to access the systems used by government agencies. The following are some benefits of using this new PAN as an identification for digital systems:

• To reduce the burden of compliance

• To reduce the gestation periods of projects

• Promote business efficiency and make it easier to start a company.

• There will be a reduction in the number of KYC requirements when PAN becomes a common identifier.

Why Are The Changes Being Made?

The PAN card is used by the income tax office to monitor financial activities across the nation. PAN cards are used to determine an individual's and an organization's tax obligations. PAN aids the GoI in lowering tax evasion. PAN is required for many activities, including the sale or purchase of automobiles, opening an account, cash payments, transactions involving more than Rupees 50,000, buying securities, buying real estate, and many more. The tax regulations are becoming more stringent by making PAN mandatory.
