According to a University Grants Commission report, a senior professor at the Gujarat Vidyapith has been ordered to assume the role of vice chancellor in-charge before the high court's deadline of January 17, 2023, for taking action against the resignation of VC Rajendra Khimani.

Professor Bharat Joshi, who works in Mahatma Gandhi's Vidyapith's Department of Education, has been asked to take over until a new hire is made. Joshi has confirmed that he was contacted about the situation. He has consented to assume command on January 16.

After its inquiry report revealed a procedural lapse in Khimani's appointment, the UGC issued a directive to the chancellor of Vidyapith, a deemed university located in Ahmedabad, in November 2021 to remove Khimani from his position as vice chancellor. According to the UGC report, there were also some errors made by Khimani during his time as the registrar of the Gujarat Vidyapith between April 1, 2004, and April 30, 2019.

According to sources, Khimani resigned before the Gujarat High Court's January 17, 2023 deadline for the university to issue an appropriate order regarding him. After Ela Bhatt (now deceased), the Vidyapith's previous chancellor and social worker, resigned, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat took over as the new chancellor.

Mahatma Gandhi established the Gujarat Vidyapith on October 18, 1920. He had been its chancellor for all of its existence. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Rajendra Prasad, and Morarji Desai, all stalwarts, had also served in this capacity. The UGC had instructed the then-chancellor to remove Khimani immediately based on a report commissioned to investigate his appointment.

According to the UGC, failure to follow its instructions would result in sanctions, including grant withdrawal, in accordance with the 2019 UGC Act and Regulations. In the high court, Khimani challenged the UGC order, calling it "illegal, arbitrary and in breach of Regulation 10.12.2.E of the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2019." On September 21, 2022, the HC rejected his petition and instructed the Vidyapith to comply with legal procedures and issue appropriate orders based on the UGC report.
