Description

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the guidelines and qualifications for the Medical Education Unit, according to an official notice. The revised guidelines include a provision for resource faculty to forgo the additional qualification of an Advance Course in Medical Education (ACME) or Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) fellowship until January 31, 2024.

The revised guidelines have been issued on the official website. According to MCC, the guidelines have been revised because medical colleges are not meeting the requirement of additional qualification, which is affecting faculty training in the Revised Basic Course Workshop (rBCW).

According to the official notice, "As per the NMC guidelines, in a medical college, a minimum of 4 MEU resource faculty must have additional qualifications like ACME, FAIMER, or equivalent. A large number of medical colleges however are not fulfilling this requirement. As a result, the rBCW training of faculty is getting affected. It has been decided to grant a limited-period waiver (up to 31st Jan 2024). A revised guideline for Medical Education Unit (MEU) is circulated herewith.

NMC Removes Additional Qualification Requirements for Faculty Members

The faculty member who wishes to join the Medical Education Unit of the NMC must have completed the MCI Basic or Revised Basic Course in MET/AETCOM in a regional or nodal centre or in a medical college affiliated with the Medical Council of India or the NMC.

MEU must have at least eight faculty members. Four of them should have completed the ACME or FAIMER fellowship. NMC has waived the qualification requirement till January 31, 2024.

Furthermore, the NMC has directed that the list of MEU resource faculty be forwarded to the respective regional centres for approval, since no changes would be permitted until January 31, 2024.
