Rishi Rajpopat, an Indian PhD student, has cracked the Panini code. He released a thesis titled “In Panini, We Trust: Discovering the Algorithm for Rule Conflict Resolution in the Astadhyayi”. This thesis has solved a problem that has confounded Sanskrit scholars for centuries.
About Panini
Panini is a well-known Sanskrit philologist, grammarian, and scholar. He was the "first descriptive linguist" and lived in India in the 5th century BCE. He is regarded as the "Father of Linguists" by Western scholars.
About Astadhyayi
Panini's Astadhyayi is one of his most important works. It is a grammar that essentially defines the ancient Sanskrit language.
It is divided into eight chapters and contains 3,959 sutras (aphoristic threads). These chapters are further broken into four divisions.
It is a prescriptive and generative grammar that governs all aspects of Sanskrit through algebraic rules.
Scholars have been unable to determine the correct application of the Astadhyayi's rules and metarules over the years since it was found.
The rules in the Astadhyayi work similarly to an algorithm. If the algorithm is given the base and suffix of a word, it will generate grammatically accurate words, phrases, and sentences. As a result, it is a painstaking process.
When two or more of Panini's rules are applied concurrently, as is generally the case, a conflict ensues.
Panini's metarule could be utilised in such cases. The scholars have interpreted metarule as "in the event of a dispute between two rules of equal strength, the rule that occurs later in the grammar's serial sequence wins". However, this frequently yields linguistically incorrect outcomes.
Thesis Of Rishi Rajpopat
Rishi Rajpopat's thesis challenged the traditional interpretation of the metarule, arguing that Panini intended that when choosing between rules applicable to the left and right sides of a word, the father of linguistics compelled the interpreter to choose the rule applicable to the right side. This discovery resulted in almost all grammatically accurate terms. This revelation enables Sanskrit users to more precisely apply the principles supplied by Astadhyayi.
