Shakya Gasan, the chief monk of the World Buddhist Pope Association of Korea, will lay the foundation stone for the International Buddhist University in Manu Bankul, South Tripura, on November 29, a senior monk announced on November 27. The foundation stone laying ceremony will be attended by Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, local MLA Sankar Roy, and senior Thai Buddhist monk Dr. Pornchai Pinyapoong.
Mr. Dhammapiya, the founder chairman of Bahujan Hitaya Education Trust (BHET) said, "Dhamma Dipa International Buddhist University (DDIBU) will be the first Buddhist University in India to be headed by Buddhist monastics and run and monitored by Buddhists. This university will set an example in the history of Indian Buddhism for the promotion and revitalization of Buddhist culture."
He further said, "His holiness Dalai Lama will not be joining the programme physically but has sent his message for his spiritual participation."
Dhammapiya hopes that DDIBU will provide insight and depth of the Buddhist viewpoint, as well as a deeper understanding of the contemporary world, and will also prepare students and youths with information and skills to lead a healthy, happy, and satisfying life.
Students from 31 different nations will be able to study and research Buddhist literature, culture, and tradition at the proposed university. There are additional plans to build medical, technical, and general degree colleges on campus. On September 26, the Tripura Assembly approved legislation to build a Buddhist university in Manu Bankul, around 135 kilometres from the state capital.
