Description
Robert Habeck, Germany's Economy Minister, has revealed that a group of firms in the country's automotive industry are planning to build a "passport" that will track the environmental impact of European batteries.
Overview
11-partner collaboration was awarded EUR 8.2 million to develop a uniform set of standards for gathering and disclosing data about European batteries. Under European Union (EU) legislation, this might become mandatory . Some of the companies collaborating in this 'battery passport' Endeavour include Umicore, BMW, and BASF.
Proposal from the European Commission
The European Commission will discuss a proposal later this year that will require battery manufacturers to disclose the content of recycled materials and the carbon footprint of all rechargeable electric vehicles (EV), industrial batteries, and light transport sold in Europe starting in 2024, and to comply with the CO2 emissions limit starting in 2027.
Batteries' requirement to incorporate recycled materials
By 2030, the European Union will make it essential for batteries to contain a minimum percentage of recovered lithium, cobalt, lead, and nickel.
Framework for a battery passport
According to the framework, European batteries must include a QR code that connects to an online database where businesses, EV owners, and regulators may obtain information about the battery's composition. This automated gadget will also make recycling the raw components found inside batteries much easier. It will also assist in reducing the reliance of this region's foreign suppliers on materials such as nickel and lithium, which are critical in the creation of batteries.
