He is a member of the Prime Minister's Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council. He has been appointed to the position for duration of three years. He is well-known for his graphene research. He is also a physics professor at Bengaluru's Indian Institute of Science. The Appointments Committee (ACC) of the Cabinet has approved the nomination. He will succeed K VijayRaghavan, a well-known biologist. K VijayRaghavan was appointed as the PSA in 2018. He was instrumental in leading the vaccine and medicine research task forces, as well as the pandemic's management. His term ended in 2021, but he was given an extension.

The PSA's mission is to protect the public

In collaboration with various government departments, industries, and institutions, the PSA's office aims to provide objective and pragmatic advice to the cabinet as well as the prime minister on matters relating to technology, science, and innovation, with a special focus on the application of technology and science in economic and social sectors and critical infrastructure.
