Description

Pfizer's Paxlovid Covid antiviral pill was "highly recommended" by the World Health Organization on April 22, 2022 for mild COVID cases with a high risk of hospitalisation. The Covid antiviral medication reduces hospitalisation better than the "existing options" and poses fewer risks than molnupiravir. In compared to intravenous remdesivir and antibodies, Pfizer's Paxlovid tablet combines nirmatrelvir and ritonavir and is easier to give. According to WHO specialists, the pill is a superior choice of treatment for unvaccinated, aged, and immunocompromised persons with COVID-19.

What is Paxlovid and how does it work?

Paxlovid is an antiviral medication for high-risk covid patients with mild infection that can be taken at home, avoiding the requirement for hospitalisation. The pill combines the medications nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. While nirmatrelvir prevents the virus from replicating by inhibiting a SARS-CoV-2 protein, ritonavir slows the breakdown of nirmatrelvir, allowing it to stay in the body for longer at higher concentrations.

Paxloid COVID antiviral pill drawbacks

Only when the disease is in its early stages can the Paxloid COVID-19 antiviral tablet be taken. This means that the pill must be given to the patients as soon as they test positive. The treatment must be started within 5 days after the commencement of the first symptoms. The course will take 5 days in total. This would be a difficult task for low- and middle-income countriesRemdesivir, on the other hand, must be taken within seven days after the onset of symptoms and is given intravenously over three days.

Background

The COVID antiviral medications have a bright future ahead of them, according to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, who believes that consumers will eventually weary of getting booster dosages. This comes as the WHO expressed "grave concern" that the access disparities found with Covid vaccinations would result in low- and middle-income countries being "pushed to the back of the line."
