Concerning the United Nations Human Rights Council
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a United Nations intergovernmental council. It is in charge of protecting and promoting human rights all throughout the world. In addition, the UNHRC investigates human rights violations and handles a variety of human rights issues. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formed this council on March 15, 2006. The UNHRC succeeded the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which had been established earlier. The United Nations Human Rights Council has 47 members who serve for three years. They are not eligible for re-election after serving two terms in a row. The UN Human Rights Council is currently led by Federico Villegas.
Procedure for removing a country
The UNGA has the authority to suspend any Council member who has violated human rights throughout their term of membership. The General Assembly requires a two-thirds majority vote to suspend a member.
Russia's suspension
The resolution was first proposed by the United States in response to Russia's military intervention in Ukraine. 'Suspension of the Russian Federation's rights to membership in the Human Rights Council' was the title of the resolution that removed Russia. The grave concerns about Russian human rights violations in Ukraine were raised in this resolution. After photographs and videos of civilians slain by the Russian army in Bucha surfaced, a campaign to suspend Russia began.
