Description

Overview

According to the IMF, India's extreme poverty rate is less than 1%, which will remain unchanged in 2020. The IMF produced a study paper that detailed consumption and poverty estimates in India during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Pandemic, Poverty, and Inequality: Evidence from India,' says the article. The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana was instrumental in reducing extreme poverty levels across the country.

How did the programme contribute to the reduction of extreme poverty?

Instead of increasing cash transfers, India's food subsidy programme was enlarged, and the needy were given free food based on their average monthly requirement. As a result, the country was able to keep extreme poverty at a low of 0.8 percent. If food subsidies had not been supplied during the pandemic, extreme poverty in the country would have climbed by 1.05 percent to 2.48 percent from 1.43 percent during this time period. Food transfers were crucial in keeping the level of extreme poverty at a minimum.

About Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana

During the COVID-19 epidemic in March 2020, the government created a programme to provide free food grains to the poor and migrants. The government distributed 5 kilogrammes of food grains per person per month. In addition, under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), an extra supply of free food grains to roughly 80 crore recipients was announced. The scheme was set to conclude on June 30, 2020, but the government decided to prolong it until November 2020. This programme was recently extended through September 2022.  This strategy absorbed a large portion of the pandemic's economic shock by supplying food to the needy, preventing extreme poverty from spreading.
