Highlights
Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, largely regarded as the next Chief of Defense Staff, will retire at the end of this month, and Vice Chief Lieutenant General Manoj Pande is expected to follow him. Lt Gen Pande will take over as the most senior officer from General Naravane. Lt Gen Pande became the most senior officer after a few high commanders departed in the recent three months. The incumbent commander of the Army's training command (ARTRAC), Lt Gen Raj Shukla, retired on March 31.
In the meantime, incumbent Army Chief Gen MM Naravane is dominating the race for the position of Chief of Defense Staff, which became vacant in December last year after General Bipin Rawat, the then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died in a chopper crash near Coimbatore.
