Description
Rajasthan, as well as areas of Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and West Bengal, commemorate the Gangaur festival. It is one of the most important festivals in Rajasthan, and it is celebrated with tremendous zeal throughout the state. During the festival, which lasts from March to April, ladies worship Gauri, Lord Shiva's wife. Harvest, spring, childbearing and marital fidelity are all celebrated during this holiday. Unmarried women worship Gauri in order to obtain her blessings in finding a suitable husband. Married ladies worship her for their husbands' health, well-being, joyful married life, and long life.
West Bengal celebrates the Gangaur Festival
The Gangaur festival was created by people who had migrated from Rajasthan to Kolkata, West Bengal. This festival has been celebrated in Kolkata for more than a century.
This festival's rituals
This event begins on the first day of Chaitra, the first day after Holi, and lasts for 16 days. It is obligatory for a newlywed girl to participate in this festival. Unmarried girls also fast for 16 days and consume only one meal every day during this festival. The celebration concludes on the third day of the Chaitra Month's Shukla paksha. During this time, Gangaur Melas are held.
Images created just for this festival
Clay images of Gauri and Isar are used for this event. In the mid of night, respected painters known as matherans paint permanent wooden figures in the homes of some Rajput families.
