Highlights
India commemorates National Maritime Day every year on April 5th. This year marks the 59th year of National Maritime Day. National Maritime Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness about the necessity of supporting transcontinental trade and the global economy as the most well-organized, safe, and environmentally responsible mode of transporting goods from one area of the world to another.
The 'NMD Award of Excellence,' together with a trophy and citation, is normally presented at the celebrations to recognise and memorialise individuals for their exceptional and remarkable lifetime achievements and performances in the Indian maritime sector at a senior level. "Sustainable Shipping beyond Covid-19" is the subject for this year's National Maritime Day 2022.
History
The first National Maritime Day was held on April 5, 1964. The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd's first ship, the SS Loyalty, sailed from Mumbai to the United Kingdom on April 5, 1919, beginning off the Indian maritime tale (London). The "Varuna" award is presented on this day to individuals who have made major contributions to the Indian maritime sector.
