Since 1967, the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) has commemorated International Children's Book Day (ICBD) on April 2nd. IBBY is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting children's books and cultivating a love of reading.

In 2022, Canada's chosen theme for International Children's Book Day is "Stories are wings that help you soar every day." A different foreign section of IBBY hosts a children's book event every year on or around April 2. The host country selects a theme and invites a well-known author and illustrator to create a global message for children.
