Highlights
Utkal Divas or Utakala Dibasha or Odisha Day is celebrated every year on April 1st to commemorate the formation of the Odisha state after a lengthy struggle to be recognised as an independent state. The state was previously known as Orissa, but it was renamed Odisha in March 2011 when the Lok Sabha passed the Orissa Bill and the Constitution Bill (113th amendment). Legend has it that modern-day Odisha was once a major portion of the ancient Kalinga. In the region, the legendary "Kalinga War" was fought by King Ashoka, who attacked and conquered the province in 260 BC. The Mughals eventually defeated the state, and in 1803 the British took control of the region's administrative powers and divided it into small sections. The western and northern districts were taken over by Bengal, while the coastal districts were taken over by Bihar and Odisha (then known as Orissa). After decades of struggle under the leadership of Odisha's great leaders, the new province was founded on April 1, 1936.
