Description

The endorsement and signing of the BIMSTEC Charter was the primary consequence of the BIMSTEC Summit 2022. This charter transforms the BIMSTEC grouping into an organisation with a flag, an emblem, and a set of formally declared principles that all member countries must follow. The BIMSTEC leaders also observed the signing of three distinct BIMSTEC agreements, which demonstrate the group's success in ongoing collaboration efforts. India will also provide USD 1 million to the BIMSTEC secretariat to help it expand its operating budget. The BIMSTEC scholarship programme, which is sponsored by Nalanda International University, has also been enlarged.

The agreements that were signed

The following agreements were signed:

A BIMSTEC Memorandum of Understanding on Mutual Cooperation in Diplomatic Training.

A BIMSTEC convention on mutual legal assistance in criminal situations has been signed.

A Memorandum of Understanding on the creation of the BIMSTEC technology transfer facility.

The BIMSTEC connection agenda made progress as well, with the adoption of the 'Master Plan for Transport Connectivity.' This plan establishes a framework for all connectivity-related initiatives that will be implemented in the near future in this region.

The main points of debate

The obstacles experienced during the COVID-19 epidemic, BIMSTEC's growth as a regional organisation, the uncertainties now faced within the international system, and the construction of basic procedures and institutional structures of the group were all discussed at this summit. The summit's main subject is "Towards a Resilient Region, Prosperous Economies, and Healthy People."

Member countries of BIMSTEC

The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation includes India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar, Bhutan, and Nepal (BIMSTEC).
