Description
The United States Senate approved a plan that will provide USD 52 billion in subsidies for semiconductor chip manufacture in the United States. The procedural vote of 68-28 sends the proposal back to the House of Representatives, kicking off a protracted process that would eventually lead to a formal procedure known as a "conference," in which legislators from both houses will seek agreement on a compromise version.
Overview
A global chip scarcity has hampered manufacturing in the electronics and automobile industries. As a result of the scarcity, several businesses have reduced production. There is a rising desire in the United States to reduce the country's dependency on foreign countries for semiconductor chips.
Concerning the bill
In June, the Senate enacted the chip law and budgeted USD 190 billion to expand the country's research and technology facilities so that it could compete with China. The House passed its version of this measure in February. The bills suggest a variety of approaches to improve the United States' competitiveness with China on a variety of issues, including trade and specific environment policy. The Senate decision was another step toward fortifying the country's supply chains, increasing output in the United States, and outperforming China and the rest of the world.
