Highlights
Robert Abela, Prime Minister of Malta, was sworn in for a second term after his ruling Labour Party won a majority in the 2022 general election. The oath of office was administered to him by President George Vella. Following the resignation of former Labour Party leader and Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Abela was sworn in as Prime Minister for the first time in January 2020. It was Abela's first election as president of the tiny Mediterranean island nation since assuming office in January 2020, following a Labor party vote.
Labor defeated its Nationalist Party opponents by about 40,000 votes, a sizable advantage in the tiny EU state with only 355,000 registered voters. Malta's capital is Valletta, and the currency is the Euro.
