Highlights
In Surat, Gujarat, a road made entirely of steel scrap was constructed as a measure of sustainable development. The steel slag road was developed by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) India, the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), and the government think tank Niti Aayog. The Hazira Industrial Area in Surat, Gujarat, has constructed a one-of-a-kind road. The road is totally comprised of 1000 percent treated steel slag. Steel slag, which is a waste product, is a major source of worry for the steel industry. The disposal of metallurgical and metal-processing waste in landfills has a very significant environmental effect. Processed steel slag aggregate has a lot of potential as a natural construction material replacement. A one-kilometre, six-lane road is being used as a test project. So far, the route has shown to be solid. Every day, about 1,000 trucks weighing 18 to 30 tonnes travel along the steel route.
