Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan remarked in the Lok Sabha on Monday that Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) are not a solution to the education sector's challenges, and that state governments must take measures to improve schools in all states.
Mr Pradhan also urged MPs to take action to ensure that the Rs 3,500 crore allocated by the central government in the last budget for upgradation of state-run schools across the country is properly utilised.
"Central schools are not the only solution...state governments must find methods," he stated during Question Hour in response to calls from a number of MPs to establish KVs in their individual constituencies.
According to the minister, the opening of new KVs is a continuous process, and they are primarily opened to meet the educational needs of wards of transferable central government employees, such as defence and paramilitary personnel, central autonomous bodies, central public sector undertakings (PSUs), and central institutes of higher learning (IHL), by providing a common educational programme across the country.
"Proposals for the establishment of new KVs are only considered if they are backed by ministries or departments of the Indian government, state governments, and administrations of union territories (UTs)," he stated.
