Description
The University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations were broken by Annamalai University in Chennai, which offered Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programmes without clearance. The university was only recognised to offer ODL programmes through the 2014-15 academic year, according to the UGC, and "no further accreditation has been accorded to it to offer any programme under ODL mode."
The UGC has informed students and other stakeholders that the varsity's ODL programmes are no longer valid. The UGC statement stated, "The university is completely liable for the career repercussions of the students, if any, arising out of the same."
Students are also warned not to enrol in any of the university's programmes through the ODL mode, according to the UGC. "Taking admissions in such programmes may jeopardise students' careers due to the lack of recognition of the programmes by the UGC," it stated.
"No higher educational institution shall provide any open and distance learning programmes and/or online programmes and admit learners thereto unless it has been granted recognition by the commission," according to the UGC's regulations for ODL programmes.
