Highlights
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has decided to prolong the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) initiative for another six months, till September 2022. It was expanded to express concern and sympathy for the impoverished and vulnerable members of society (Phase VI). In addition to his usual NFSA allotment of foodgrains, each recipient under the expanded PM-GKAY would receive a monthly 5 kilogramme free ration. This means that every low-income household would receive about twice the usual allocation.
Phase-V of the PM-GKAY plan was slated to finish in March 2022. The PM-GKAY has been in place since April 2020, making it the world's largest food security programme. This will help over 80 million people across India and, as previously stated, is entirely funded by the Indian government.
