Overview
This announcement has provided much-needed respite to different tech behemoths such as Google and Meta. For more than a year, authorities have been working on a deal to replace the defunct Privacy Shield, an agreement that allows companies to exchange Europeans' data with the US.
Privacy Shield is no longer valid
The Privacy Shield had become null and void in July 2020. This was a setback for the IT businesses that relied on this system for data transfer between the US and the EU. The European Union's highest court sided with privacy campaigner Max Schemes, who contended that the present system did not protect Europeans against US spying.
Concerning the new accord
This newly stated framework emphasises the dedication to data security, privacy, and the standards that govern them. A seamless flow of data between the EU and the US will aid in the facilitation of USD 7.1 trillion in business interactions. This agreement will also contribute to the trustworthiness and predictability of data flows across the Atlantic, therefore protecting all persons' privacy.
Respite to the tech companies
This recently announced agreement will provide some relief to IT businesses that were experiencing legal uncertainty when it came to transporting data across borders following the decision to discontinue Privacy Shield. Meta has previously stated that it may be forced to stop off Instagram and Facebook in Europe due to the Privacy Shield problem.
