Overview
The Indian Antarctica Bill has been launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. This law is anticipated to assist the United States in meeting its duties under the 1982 Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, and the 1998 Treaty of the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic. This bill will be tabled during the current Budget Session of the Parliament. India's Antarctic programme began in 1981, and 40 research excursions have been performed since then. India has also established three bases on the African continent.
India's Antarctic base stations
India now has two fully operational base stations in Antarctica: Maitri, which was founded in 1988, and Bharati, which was created in 2012. Another, Dakshin Gangotri, was founded in 1983 but is no longer in operation. There are proposals to create a new base to replace Maitri, which has outlived its usefulness. The Maitri base must be replaced as soon as possible since it has been compromised and international bodies have stated that it is no longer environmentally sustainable.
