This event will include around 150 pairs of buffalo and bulls. This event is normally conducted in November, but owing to COVID-19 constraints, it is being held in March for the second year in a row. The tournament in 2021 had 148 pairs of bulls. The season's final two Kambalas will be held at Uppinangady and Venur in April.
What exactly is Kambala?
It is an annual buffalo race conducted in Karnataka. Local Tuluva landowners from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are sponsoring this event. These activities are organised by Kambala samithis. More than 45 races are organised each year in the coastal area of Karnataka.
This race's format
The race track, where this event is held is a slushy paddy field. Farmers who whip the buffaloes force them away. Winners receive silver and gold coins. Some organising committees present a gold coin weighing eight grammes to the winner, while others grant cash rewards.
Decorations for buffalo
The buffaloes participating in this event are adorned with silver and brass headpieces, rope bridles, and coloured jhls. Paavade is the name of the towel used to cover the buffalo's neck.
