Overview
The United States is attempting to persuade its partners to impose further sanctions on Russia. The Russian economy has already been damaged as a result of the sanctions. After Russia began invading Ukraine, the Western countries banded together to fight it. The cost of war is harming the global economy, so whether this unity will continue or not remains to be seen. The war has exacerbated the energy issue. This is a heated subject at this summit, with leaders from Portugal, Spain, Greece, and Italy hoping for a positive reaction. The NATO Summit will also aim to strengthen the security of the Eastern front. The NATO meeting will also address Russia's use of biological and chemical weapons.
Russian energy sources are being boycotted
The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has responded unfavourably to proposals for a boycott of Russian energy supply. This would have a huge negative impact on Germany's economy. The European Union's executive arm encouraged the United States to expand liquefied natural gas supply to Europe so that the EU might lessen its reliance on Russian energy supplies.
The impact of a Russian energy boycott
90% of the natural gas needed to heat homes, produce electricity, and power industry in the EU is imported, with 40% provided by Russia. Large amounts of oil are also imported from Russia. As a result, a boycott of Russian energy supply will be extremely damaging to the European Union.
The refugee crisis
NATO's eastern flank members will meet to explore how European countries and the United States can work together to address the refugee situation caused by the war.
