Description
Highlights
Kerala is set to be the first state in the country to utilise carbon-neutral farming practises in select regions, with the government committing Rs 6 crore for this purpose in the 2022-23 Budget. In the first phase, carbon-neutral farming will be implemented on 13 farms managed by the Agriculture Department and tribal communities. Plans are in the works to convert the Aluva State Seed Agriculture into a carbon-neutral farm. In the second phase, model carbon-neutral farms will be built in all 140 Assembly seats.
Improved Methods
The Agriculture Department was active in the stepwise introduction of novel farming methods to minimise carbon emissions and help in soil carbon storage. The administration has already begun discussions with experts in this area. Improving soil health through integrated farming methods, crop rotation, fertigation adoption, precision farming methods, modifying how the soil is rinsed, and restricting indiscriminate fertiliser usage were all significant in minimising soil deterioration and thereby lowering agriculture's carbon footprint.
