Overview
The public can access this recently available atlas via the website mausam.imd.gov.in. This e-atlas will assist disaster management authorities in taking preventive measures against any disaster that may occur. During the inaugural ceremony for this e-atlas, one of the topics discussed was the difficulties in hydrological modelling in urbanised river basins for flood forecasting. The IMD sponsored an exhibition and made its facilities available to the public.
IMD Facts
The Ministry of Earth Sciences oversees the India Meteorological Department (IMD). It is the primary agency in charge of weather forecasting, meteorological measurements, and seismology in the country. This organisation is based in Delhi and operates hundreds of observation stations around India and Antarctica. The IMD has regional offices in Mumbai, Chennai, Nagpur, Kolkata, New Delhi, and Guwahati. The current Director-General of this organisation is Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra. The IMD is also one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres of the World Meteorological Organization. IMD is in charge of tropical cyclone naming, forecasting, and warning dissemination in the Northern Indian Ocean region that encompasses the Bay of Bengal, the Malacca Straits, the Persian Gulf, and the Arabian Sea.
