Soumeylou Boubèye Maiga, Mali's former Prime Minister, died of illness. Maiga served as Mali's Prime Minister from 2017 until 2019. He has been imprisoned since the government was overthrown in an August 2021 military coup. He became Keita's Prime Minister in 2017, but resigned in April 2019 after a tragedy that murdered 160 people.
Mali has been battling a jihadist insurgency that has spread from the north to the middle of the country, as well as neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger. The war has killed thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands more, wreaking havoc on an already impoverished country. Mali's capital is Bamako; its currency is the West African CFA franc; and it is located in Africa.
