Highlights
Francis kéré, an architect, educator, and social activist, has been named the 2022 winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, architecture's top accolade. He was born in Burkina Faso's tiny town of Gando. Kéré is the first African to get the Pritzker Prize. The Pritzker architecture prize, established by the Hyatt Foundation in 1979, is awarded to architects whose built work demonstrates talent, vision, and commitment. It is widely regarded as one of the world's most prestigious architectural awards and is sometimes referred to as the Nobel Prize in Architecture. According to the Pritzker Foundation, the Pritzker Architecture Prize is given "regardless of nationality, race, faith, or philosophy." The award includes a cash prize of $100,000, a citation certificate, and, since 1987, a bronze medallion. The prize was given to French architects Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal in 2021. Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell of Grafton architects were recognised in 2020.
