China has remained mute on the return of almost 23,000 Indian students who have been stranded at home due to COVID-19 visa and flight prohibitions, despite rumours that Beijing is allowing international students from a variety of nations to re-join their studies.
When asked about China allowing students from Pakistan, Thailand, and the Solomon Islands to return, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a media briefing that permission is granted based on the students' needs.
"The Chinese government places a high value on international students returning to China to continue their education," he said.
"In view of the changing international pandemic scenario and the features of the students' majors," Mr Wang said, "it is coordinating arrangement for a small number of foreign students with actual needs to return to China on the basis of assuring sound epidemic prevention and control."
Over 23,000 Indian students, largely studying medical, have been stuck in India for the past two years, and despite repeated appeals from the students and the Indian Embassy here, Beijing has refused to allow them to return.
