Description
Overview
The purpose of this day is to help the United Nations accomplish Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6). SDG 6 aims to achieve universal access to sanitation and clean drinking water by 2030. This day serves as a reminder to take preventative measures to address the global water issue.
World Water Day 2022's theme is "Groundwater, Making the Invisible Visible." The events planned for this day will centre on the importance of groundwater. Many organisations, as well as individuals, are being asked to raise awareness about this resource, which is rapidly disappearing.
This day's history
The idea for this day was initially proposed in 1992, during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating March 22nd as World Water Day. This day was first observed in 1993.
This day's goal
This day aims to conserve subterranean water, prevent it from overexploitation, and raise awareness about the pollution that is harming it. According to the United Nations, in order to endure the consequences of climate change, sustainable groundwater consumption and protection should be prioritised.
