Overview
On this day in 1960, during a peaceful protest against apartheid pass laws in South Africa, police opened fire, killing 69 people and injuring 180 others. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) requested the international community to step up efforts to abolish racial discrimination in 1966. The United Nations General Assembly endorsed a variety of initiatives to combat racism in 1979. The United Nations General Assembly voted to hold an annual week of solidarity against racism beginning March 21st. The topic for this year's celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is "VOICES FOR ACTION AGAINST RACISM."
The purpose of this year's commemoration
This day emphasised the significance of increasing public representation in all decision-making sectors in order to combat racism. It also reiterated the significance of the rights to free expression and peaceful assembly, as well as acknowledged the contributions of everyone who stood up to racism. This day also urged people all across the world to raise their voices in opposition to racism and racial injustice. It also aimed to create a safe space for anybody speaking out against racism.
