Overview
Narasinghapettai nagaswaram is a traditional wind instrument created in a hamlet near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu's Nodal Officer for GI Registration of Products filed the application for the GI tag on behalf of Thanjavur Musical Instruments Workers Co-operative Cottage Industrial Society Limited. Narasinganpettai village craftsmen, who inherited their predecessors' abilities in crafting wooden instruments, are producing them using a procedure that needs specific expertise. The nagaswaram utilised by artists nowadays is called pari nagaswaram, and it is longer than the thimiri.
The nagaswaram's form
This musical instrument features a cylindrical body that is shaped like a bell at the bottom. The nagaswaram in this form gives volume and tone. The length of the instrument is two and a half feet.
Narasinghapettai nagaswaram manufacturing method
The aacha or Hardwickia binata tree is used to make the majority of Narasinghapettai nagaswaram. Most of the time, wood from historic houses is also used by the craftspeople. Drilling equipment and carpentry tools are also used by artists to create the nagaswarams that are used in different occasions such as festivals, weddings, and fairs.
