India, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Australia, and China were the top five arms imports from 2017 to 21. The top five armament exporters were the United States, Russia, France, China, and Germany. During the 2017-21 timeframe, the top five importers accounted for approximately 38 percent of worldwide arms imports. During the 2017-21 timeframe, the top five exporters contributed for approximately 77 percent of global arms exports. According to the research, the amount of global arms shipments for the 2017-21 periods was 4.6 percent lower than during the 2012-16 period. However, global armament shipments increased by 3.9 percent between 2017 and 21 compared to 2007-11.
Data regarding India
According to the research, India is the world's largest importer of weaponry, accounting for 11% of worldwide imports in 2017-21. Russia was India's leading supplier of armaments from 2012 to 2016 and again from 2017 to 21. However, between these two decades, India's imports from Russia fell by 47 percent. During the same time period, India's imports from France grew, and France surpassed the United States as India's second-largest supplier of armaments.
India's efforts at indigenization
Between 2012 and 2016, the overall amount of imports into India declined by 21%. This illustrates the government's aim to boost indigenous manufacture of armaments and military systems. Domestic manufacturing businesses receive around 68 percent of the capital budget for 2022-23.
