Concerning the Crop Diversification Index
The agricultural diversification index starts at one and indicates the proportion of total farmed area dedicated to a single crop. A higher index score indicates that the crops are more diverse. The current agricultural diversity index was derived using the area under 77 different crops farmed in the state, including all food, non-food, cash crops, and floriculture. Many districts in Telangana have index scores ranging from 0 to 5. The agricultural diversification index will serve as a starting point for future crop diversification efforts in the state.
Observations
Telangana grows 77 crop kinds, according to the agricultural diversity index. Only around ten crops (mainly grains) are favoured for diversity among the 77 crops. Nirmal, Vikarabad, and Sangareddy are the top three districts in terms of agricultural diversification. In terms of agricultural diversification, Peddapalli, Karimnagar, and Suryapet are the worst three districts. Maize planting area has reduced dramatically in certain districts, where paddy is largely farmed, but cotton cropping area has expanded. Telangana's most popular crops are paddy, maize, and legumes. Wheat, jowar, bajra, chillies, and other crops are also high priority crops for farmers in the state. The present agricultural diversification index result indicates that crop diversity is more important in Telangana in order to achieve sustainable development.
