Highlights
Rupiah Banda, the former President of Zambia, died after a two-year struggle with cancer. He was 85 years old. Banda was Zambia's fourth president between 2008 and 2011. Banda held top diplomatic positions under first President Kenneth Kaunda before being appointed Vice President by then-President Levy Mwanawasa in 2006. When Mwanawasa suffered a stroke in mid-2008, Banda took over as acting president. Banda barely won the same year's October elections on a governing party ticket.
In 1966, Rupiah Banda married his first wife, Hope Mwansa Makulu, and the pair had three kids. Hope Mwansa Banda died on October 11, 2000, in South Africa. Thandiwe Banda, a political science instructor, was nearly thirty years his junior Banda. Thandiwe Banda served as the First Lady of Zambia from 2008 until 2011.
