What exactly are technical textiles?
Technical textiles are fabrics that have uses in a variety of industries, including vehicles, agriculture, healthcare, industrial safety, personal protection, construction, and so on. Based on their application, technical textiles are categorised into 12 categories, Agrotech, Meditech, Buildtech, Mobiltech, Clothtech, Oekotech, Geotech, Packtech, Hometech, Protech, Indutech, and Sportech.
The Potential of India
Since ancient times, India has been a key centre for traditional textiles. With modernity, there is a demand for these textiles, and India, with its large demographic strength, can undoubtedly contribute to the industry. Currently, this sector accounts for 13% of the overall textile industry and 0.7 percent of total GDP. Some of the elements contributing to India's growth in this industry include the availability of raw materials such as cotton, wool, jute, and silk, as well as a solid value chain, low-cost labour, power, and changing consumer trends. However, there are obstacles connected with it, as India lags far behind in R&D in this industry.
National Textile Technical Mission (NTTM)
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) authorised this mission in 2020 with the goal of elevating India to the world leader in technology textiles and increasing their market utilisation. It will be executed over a four-year period beginning in 2020-21.
It is divided into three sections, the first of which is devoted to
R&D and Innovation
Export Promotion of Technical Textiles Promoting and establishing a market for Technical Textiles
Education and skill enhancement
Schemes that are connected to it:
Integrated Textile Park Scheme (SITP) is the initiative, that was started in 2005 to encourage entrepreneurship by offering financial assistance and cutting-edge infrastructure, was recently extended for the period 2017-20. Codes from the Harmonized System of Nomenclature (HSN) for Technical Textile, starts also in 2019. The Government of India's Ministry of Textiles devoted 207 HSN codes to technical textiles to aid in the monitoring of import and export statistics, as well as in giving financial assistance and other incentives to manufacturers. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) plan for the textile sector intends to boost the production of high-value Man-Made Fiber (MMF) fabrics, garments, and technological textiles.
