Description

On Monday, the Supreme Court noted that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had decided to reduce the cut-off scores for admission to NEET-PG courses by 15% across all categories, and dismissed a petition seeking a reduction in the cut-off marks.

The doctors' plea has been dismissed, according to a bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Surya Kant, because they will be able to gain admissions and their grievances will be addressed.

"By a communication of the Union government dated March 12, 2022, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has determined, in conjunction with the National Medical Commission, that there shall be a reduction of 15%ile for admission to the NEET PG programmes across all categories," it said. Thus, the cut-off percentile for the general category is 35, for the physically handicapped general category is 30, and for reserved SC/ST  25."

"We offer them liberty to adopt suitable procedures in accordance with law, including by requesting for revival of existing proceedings," the bench added if the petitioners still have a grievance. As a result, the petition is dismissed at this time, with the petitioners' liberty reserved as mentioned above."

At the commencement, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, who is representing the petitioners, who are MBBS doctors, stated that counselling will end on March 30 and that the cut-off marks have been reduced. He said that the cut-off points were dropped last year as well, but that 7000 seats were left unfilled.

Mr Bhushan stated that a petition has been filed arguing that there should be no cut-off marks, and the court may order that the motion be considered. PG seats that generally leave vacant, according to advocate Gaurav Sharma, are those that are largely related to academic pursuits. The bench then ordered Sharma to provide the notification that had been issued regarding the decrease of cut-off marks.
