In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Rameswar Teli, stated that the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) in 2016 to provide clean cooking fuel to poor households, and that the target of providing 8 crore deposit-free LPG connections was met in September, 2019. On the 10th of August, 2021, Ujjwala 2.0 was launched on a pan-India basis to give an extra one crore LPG connections, complete with a free first refill and stove.

 In May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MOPNG) launched the 'Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana' (PMUY) as a flagship scheme with the goal of making clean cooking fuel such as LPG available to rural and deprived households that were previously using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, cow-dung cakes, and so on. The use of traditional cooking fuels has a negative influence on both rural women's health and the environment. The distribution of 8 crore LPG connections to homes has boosted coverage from 62% in 2016 to 95% in 2021. One of the scheme's underappreciated successes is its role in lowering interior pollution. Indoor pollution has the greatest impact on the respiratory health of women, particularly in rural regions. Household biomass burning has direct consequences on women and other members of the household. An enlightened government would prioritise universal access to cleaner fuels such as LPG while promoting higher usage by highlighting health advantages, making it a trademark initiative that supports not just social justice but also environmental justice.
