According to a UNESCO report, India had the second-longest school closures after Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic. Union Minister of State for Education Annpurna Devi remarked in the Lok Sabha on Monday that India had the second-longest school closures after Uganda during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a significant impact on the education system, not only in India but also in other nations, she said in a written response to a query.
"India, behind Uganda, is the second country whose offline schools have been closed for the longest period of time, according to the UNESCO report. However, the methodology employed in the study is not mentioned in the paper, and the data source is reported to be a study conducted by a non-governmental organisation "Devi expressed her thoughts.
Schools were closed around the world as a precautionary measure to protect students from COVID-19. "On September 2020, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that states and UT governments may take a decision on re-opening of schools in a graded manner, and the decision shall be taken in consultation with the respective school or institution management based on their assessment of the situation."
"Due to school closures, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the education system not only in India but also in other countries around the world. This also resulted in a situation in which the Centre, States, and educational institutions were forced to adopt online technologies and blended modes of education at a rapid pace in order to ensure students' continued education "said the minister.
"Innovation funds from Samagra Shiksha have been used to establish mobile schools, virtual studios, virtual classrooms in schools, Continuous Learning Plan (CLP), (provide) pre-loaded tablets, and other initiatives in various states and UTs in remote or rural areas where online classes are difficult to access."
"The Union Budget 2022-23 has given a significant boost to education with a total allocation of Rs 1,04,278 crore, representing a nearly 12% increase over the previous year," she said.
