Significance
After a 32-year hiatus, the CEO of Tata Group has returned to the helm of Air India. JRD Tata, the creator of Air India, was the airline's CEO for decades after it was nationalised. He served as chairman until February 1978, when he was relieved of his duties by the Morarji Desai cabinet. In 1982, the Indira Gandhi administration reappointed JRD Tata to the board of directors of Air India. Ratan Tata later served as the carrier's chairman from 1986-87 until early 1990. There are high expectations for the airline's prospects to improve now that it is back in the hands of its founder. To become the world's most technologically sophisticated airline, the Tata Company intends to expand Air India's network, increase service standards, and upgrade its fleet. Natrajan Chandrasekarana has stated that strengthening Air India's fundamental service standards and on-time performance will be priority goals for the group in the coming months.
Who will be the new CEO of Air India?
The Tata Group will shortly name a new CEO for Air India to replace former Turkish Airlines Chairman Ilker Ayci, who turned down the assignment due to resistance in India. Ayci was supposed to take over as CEO and MD of Air India before April 1, 2022. He had first accepted the position but then declined, claiming that his nomination had been 'coloured' by the Indian media. Tata Sons is said to have finalised the new CEO of Air India after conversations over the previous several days. To address the operational problems, the firm is trying to bring on a new CEO as soon as possible.
