Description

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General stated on March 10, 2022, that the IAEA had succeeded in establishing a high-level direct discussion on nuclear security between Russia and Ukraine.

Creating a direct dialogue

In Turkey, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency met with the foreign ministers of Russia and Ukraine. Delegations from both nations were also present. Both governments decided during the conference to create high-level direct interaction and to continue working with the IAEA.

Ukraine's nuclear reactor status

Despite the on-going armed conflict, eight of Ukraine's 15 nuclear reactors are still operational, according to the IAEA. Russia also gained control of certain reactors. Ukraine told the IAEA on March 9th that the destroyed Chernobyl nuclear power station had been unplugged from the power system. Cooling spent nuclear fuel is accomplished by the use of electricity. However, disconnecting from the power grid will not have a negative impact on safety because cooling will continue to be provided by backup diesel generators.

Concerning the IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a self-governing international organisation founded in 1957 under the IAEA Statute. It does, however, report to both the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The company's headquarters are in Vienna, Austria. Its goal is to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes. It does, however, advocate for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The Worldwide Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) offers international safeguards against the abuse of nuclear technology and nuclear materials and encourages the application of nuclear security standards. Following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the IAEA advised both countries to exercise moderation and safeguard the safety of nuclear facilities.
