Description

The World Bank, the Government of India, and the State Governments of Karnataka and Odisha have signed a USD 115 million agreement for the Rejuvenating Watersheds for Agricultural Resilience through Innovative Development Programme, which will assist national and state governments in adopting improved watershed management practises to help farmers become more resilient to climate change, increase income, and promote higher productivity.

Concerning the REWARD Project

REWARD (Rejuvenating Watersheds for Agricultural Resilience through Innovative Development) is a project being carried out in three Indian states. It is a six-year project that will be one of the world's largest water management initiatives. This project is collaboration between the Ministry of Rural Development's Department of Land Resources and the World Bank.

The Project's Financial Structure

The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the World Bank's lending arm, will provide USD 115 million to this project. The loan has maturity duration of 15 years and a grace period of 4.5 years.

Karnataka will receive USD 60 million, Odisha will receive USD 49 million, and the Indian government's Department of Land Resources will receive the remaining USD 6 million.

The Project's Objective

To promote water and land conservation, as well as to minimise soil runoff, gather rainfall, regenerate natural vegetation, and refill the groundwater table.

The project also intends to strengthen the capacity of the state and central institutions in order for them to plan and implement better watershed management and development initiatives.

Watershed management that is effective can assist rain fed people enhance their livelihoods while also developing a more resilient food system. The REWARD initiative will assist state governments with watershed planning and implementation improvement. It will also help participating states and others apply scientific methods to watershed development.
