The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the Second Advance Estimates of Major Crop Production for 2021-22. The output of food grains is forecast to hit a new high of 316.06 million tonnes.

Highlights

According to the 2nd Advance Estimates for 2021-22, total food grain output in the country hit a record high of 316.06 million tonnes, up 5.32 million tonnes over the previous year. Furthermore, output in 2021-22 is 25.35 million tonnes greater than the five-year average of food grain production (2016-17 to 2020-21).

In 2021-22, rice output reached 127.93 million tonnes. It is 11.49 million tonnes more than the previous five-year average of 116.44 million tonnes. In 2021-22, wheat output reached 111.32 million tonnes. It is 7.44 million tonnes more than the normal wheat production of 103.88 million tonnes. The output of coarse cereals and nutrients is 49.86 million tonnes, which is 3.28 million tonnes more than the average. Pulses output in 2021-22 are predicted to be 26.96 million tonnes, up 3.14 million tonnes from the previous five-year average of 23.82 million tonnes. Oilseed production is predicted to reach 37.15 million tonnes in 2021-22, an increase of 1.20 million tonnes from the previous record of 35.95 million tonnes in 2020-21. Furthermore, oil seed output in 2021-22 is 4.46 million tonnes greater than the average oil seed production. Sugarcane output in the country is predicted to reach 414.04 million tonnes in 2021-22, an increase of 40.59 million tonnes above the previous year's average of 373.46 million tonnes. Cotton output is predicted to be 34.06 million bales, a 1.12 million bale increase over the previous year's average of 32.95 million bales. Production of jute and Mesta is likely to be 9.57 million bales.
