Description

In accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Central Government has authorised the 'New India Literacy Programme' for fiscal years 2022-27, which would now include all elements of Adult Education in the country. 'Adult Education' will henceforth be referred to as 'Education for All.'

"As a progressive step, the Ministry has also decided that from now on, the term "Education for All" will be used in place of "Adult Education" by the Ministry due to the fact that the terminology "Adult Education" does not adequately include all non-literates of 15 years and above," the Education Ministry said. According to the 2011 census, the number of non-literates in the nation aged 15 and above was 25.76 crore (9.08 crore male and 16.68 crore female). According to the government, 18.12 crore adults in the country are illiterate at the moment.

The New India Literacy Programme aims to teach fundamental literacy and numeracy, as well as critical life skills such as financial literacy, digital literacy, commercial skills, health care and awareness, child care and education, and family welfare; vocational skills, basic education, and continuing education.

The plan will be made available online. Three crore kids from around 7 lakh schools enrolled with the UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) and over 50 lakh instructors from government, aided, and private schools will take part as volunteers.

As volunteers, around 20 lakh students from teacher education and higher education institutes will participate. According to the government, the initiative would be supported by Anganwadi workers, ASHA workers, PRIs, and around 50 lakh NYSK, NSS, and NCC employees.

For the fiscal years 2022-27, the total anticipated outlay for the programme is Rs 1,037.90 crore, which comprises a national portion of Rs 700 crore and a state share of Rs 337.90 crore.
