Description
Corbevax is a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine that, like Covaxin, will be delivered through intramuscular injection 28 days apart.
The Drugs Controller General of India's (DCGI) Subject Expert Committee (SEC) has recommended that Biological E's COVID-19 vaccine, Corbevax, be granted restricted emergency use authorisation for use among adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, subject to specific limitations.
After examining the safety and immunogenicity results from the clinical research on children and adolescents, the SEC recommended emergency approval of Corbevax for immunisation of children. Corbevax is a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine that, like Covaxin, will be delivered through intramuscular injection 28 days apart. Biological E, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical firm, created it. An expert panel on vaccine administration is due to convene shortly to determine whether to award Corbevax emergency authorisation.
Significance
If Corbevax is approved by the DGCI, it will be the second vaccine to be approved for emergency use in India for people under the age of 18 after Covaxin. The permission is expected to hasten the existing immunisation campaign for youngsters aged 15 to 18.
Everything you need to know about the Corbevax vaccination!
Corbevax is India's first RBD protein subunit vaccine produced in-house against Covid-19. Rather of employing the entire virus, the vaccine induces an immune response by using pieces of the virus, such as the spike protein. The vaccine has a safe S-protein antigen technology that attaches to the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme-2 (ACE2) receptor on the host cell membrane, allowing the virus to enter.
When an individual's immune system recognises the S protein, it produces antibodies in the form of white blood cells to guard against infection.
Corbevax Cost
The Corbevax vaccine is projected to cost roughly Rs 145 ex-tax. According to reports, the central government has already paid an advance payment of Rs 1,500 crore to reserve 30 crore doses of the Corbevax COVID-19 vaccine.
Background
Over 1.5 crore adolescents aged 15 to 18 years have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccination in India. So far, the age group has received a total of 5,24,01,155 first doses and 1,63,10,368 second doses.
