Description

If President Vladimir Putin launches an invasion of Ukraine, Valentyna Konstantinovska, 79, plans to pick up arms and fight Russian soldiers'mano a mano' to safeguard her city.

Babushka's Bio Since the fighting began in 2014, Battalion Konstantinovska and an army of 'babushkas' (Older Women) have started volunteering.

They dug trenches, produced nets, gave supplies, provided medical treatment, and constructed an observation tower. Azov, a far-right movement, organises them. Their training included fundamental teachings in first-aid, survival and evacuation, firing a weapon, and weapon safety.

In nearly eight years of fighting, they have only received safety or awareness training.

What exactly is the Azov movement?

The Azov movement is an all-volunteer infantry military outfit on the far right. They are white supremacists and neo-Nazis who are suspected of harbouring white supremacist and neo-Nazi ideas. It is a Kyiv-based political wing with limited support. In the 2019 elections, they were unable to get any seats in parliament. However, Azov's military branch is frequently viewed as defenders in Mariupol city, having regained the city from Russian-backed rebels during a short takeover in 2014. They are the first line of defence in an attack, with a base 40 kilometres from a vital port city.

Azov was banned from Facebook in 2019 due to hate speech. The event was publicised on Instagram without any mention of Azov's participation.

The Russian-Ukrainian confrontation

In March and April 2021, Russia began stockpiling military people and weaponry near its border with Ukraine. It is the largest deployment of forces since Russia took Crimea in 2014. This sparked fears and sparked an international crisis about a possible invasion. By June 2021, the troops would have been partially gone. However, the situation resurfaced in October and November 2021. By December 2021, 100,000 Russian troops would be passed along the border once more. This crisis arose as a result of the lengthy Russia-Ukraine war, which began in early 2014.
