Description

Indian Railways Management Service (IRMS)

The Central Government has published a gazette notification announcing the merging of eight existing IRMS services under the IRMS umbrella - Indian Railways Management Service. The announcement, announced in a Cabinet decision on December 24, 2019, follows two years after the foundation of a new Group 'A' Central service known as the Indian Railway Management Service. The unification of eight current services under the Ministry of Railroads is being done to remove 'departmentalism' in railways, and as a result of this effort, just two departments, namely Medical Service Department (MSD) of the Railway Protection Force (RPF).

What services will be combined under IRMS?

According to the official gazette announcement, the IRMS is being formed by combining eight existing services of the national carrier Indian Railways. These are some examples.

Engineers in the Indian Railway Service (IRSE)

Mechanical Engineers in the Indian Railway Service

Electrical Engineers in the Indian Railway Service (IRSEE)

Railway Stores Service in India (IRSS)

Signal Engineers in the Indian Railway Service (IRSSE)

Railway Traffic Service in India (IRTS)

Railway Personnel Service in India (IRPS)

Accounts Services for Indian Railways (IRAS)

Exam and Recruitment Process for IRMS

Because the majority of the services are consolidated under IRMS deal with Engineering Services, the positions available for recruitment will be along the same lines. Mechanical Engineers, Civil Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Electronics and Telecommunications Engineers are likely to be employed through IRMS.

According to the notification, the IRMS - Indian Railways Management Service - would be recruited through the UPSC ESE (Engineering Services Examination) or IES (Indian Engineering Services) test. The test is divided into three phases, which are explained below.

Preliminary Exam: MCQ-based screening test; qualified candidates advance to the Main Exam.

Main Exam: Offline or Pen-Paper Descriptive Exam

In-person Interview: A team of specialists will conduct a personality test during the interview.

According to the authorised cabinet note, IRMS officers would be able to become functional members and the railway board's chairman/CEO.
