Highlights
The surface of Venus is typically obscured by heavy clouds. However, in two recent flybys, Parker Solar Probe utilised its Wide-Field Imager (WISPR) to scan the whole night side in visible wavelengths.
It was a form of light that the human eye could perceive and that extended into the near-infrared range.
The photos were stitched together into a film, exhibiting a faint glow from the surface that emphasises distinguishing characteristics such as continental areas, plateaus, and plains.
A luminous halo of oxygen may also be seen in the atmosphere surrounding the world.
The pictures' significance
Such photographs of Earth's twin would aid scientists in understanding more about Venus's surface geology, minerals that may be present, and evolution.
Venus's first WISPR photos
The first WISPR photos were captured in July 2020, during Parker's third flyby. The third flyby is used by the spacecraft to bend its orbit closer to the Sun.
WISPR Information
WISPR is an abbreviation for 'Wireless Internet Service Provider Roaming.' It is a proposed protocol published to the Wi-Fi Alliance that will allow users to wander between wireless internet service providers in the same way that mobile phone users may roam between carriers. A RADIUS server is used to authenticate the subscriber's credentials.
Why was WISPR created?
WISPR was created to detect subtle characteristics in the wind and solar environment. WISPR was also expected to be capable of imaging the cloud above Venus when Parker went through it, according to some scientists. WISPR, on the other hand, looked through the clouds to the surface of Venus.
Parker Solar Probe
NASA's Parker Solar Probe is a space probe. It was launched in 2018 with the intention of observing the Sun's outer corona.
